Hidden meanings in Film noir: CHEF (2014) - Sometimes its better to fall...

Published on 1 February 2026 at 10:17

Thank you for joining us on this fun food truck episode starring Hollywood heavyweights like Sofia Vergara, Robert Downey Jr., Jon Favreau, and Scarlett Johansson. This movie is a family fun movie with lots of lessons. Enjoy reading.

  • Social Media Buzz Power
Carl's (Jon Favreau) bad review goes viral on social media causing more impact than expected. This helped symbolize the power of social media to spread news or propaganda. This power has been greatly increased with the introduction of Ai which can create realistic images and videos.

  • Do Nothing
Carl responds to his criticisms on twitter and only gains more backlash in response. This is a lesson that its sometimes better to ignore bad publicity and focus on giving a better experience or improving your act. Engaging critics only give them more leverage to strike again. That's why most celebs are trained to not respond to fans, some of them aren't even in control of their social profiles. Learn to do nothing, learn to ignore negativity.
  • Professionalism VS Personality
Carl is taken off the job by Riva (Dustin Hoffman) for failing to stick to the menu and causing a bad review. This is a lesson on the importance of distinguishing between your professional life and your personal life. Likewise for those who are enslaved to the fraternities and other systems of cheating and the destruction of love.
It is important to know that what you work with or work for, isn't your personal property and you can be replaced if you go against the wishes or rules of the system. There are countless ladies living a life of luxury in 5 star hotels only to be kicked out in their 30s with nothing. There are countless workers who have dedicated their lives to a job only to lose it with no retirement benefits. Have your own thing, have something that is truly yours. At the very least don't get carried away by camaraderie into believing you are a part owner. They only keep you happy to help them make more money, so do your job professionally and own your life personally.
However be conscious of systems that are bonded from preventing your independence, such systems kick you out when you make moves to be independent. For example, girls introduced to the sale of love, soon fall out of favor if they invest or start their own business. This is based on the demonic tenet that 'angelic don't benefit', so the bonds work against personal benefits. The demonic tenets are subject of previous reviews including Honey, Hope Lost, The House on Fin Street, The Immigrant, and Alanis

  • Loyal to Benefits
Carl tries to draw support by asking his next in-line, Tony (Bobby Cannavale) to also quit the chef duties. Tony ignores his request and carries on with the preparations for the second coming of the reviewer, Ramsey Michel (Oliver Platt). This is an important lesson to people who charismatically think they can effect change.
People are loyal to benefits, if you can't cover their needs they would see little reason to follow you. This is also a major factor behind power tussles, mutiny, and coups. When you can no longer meet the needs of your followers, you might get a rebellion.

  • Stay Calm
Carl storms the restaurant, as Ramsey writes more insulting reviews, and causes a scene that also goes viral. His aggressiveness only caused more harm to his reputation. This lessons shows the importance of staying calm. A calm mind helps you objectively assess a situation and consider the consequences of reacting. Even in emergency situations, a calm mind provides a better response.
We reviewed the importance of keeping calm in previous issues including No Escape, Wrong Turn, Match, Two in the Bush, and American Sweatshop.
  • Passion brings Success
Carl gives his son a lecture at the food truck, because he tried to give burnt sandwiches out for free. This is a lesson for building successful ventures. To be successful or to find work fulfilling, you'd have to be passionate about it. Most people who seek success quit a 9-5 job and start their own business, only to find it more demanding. Your own business could be a 7am to 10pm when you're starting out, so only passion can sustain such drives. Only passion can keep you consistent at a reasonable quality to succeed.

  • The Accursed 1st
Carl is soon joined by one of his staff, Martin (John Leguizamo). It looks like a friendly show of solidarity but on a second look and from the view of Our Perspective, Martin appears to play the role of the 1st. In this perspective, he also needs to be the 1st to work in a food truck, so driven by bonds, he takes off to join his former colleague.
The bonds to be 1st is definitely not a blessing, a right, or a veneration. We shouldn't treat it like an accolade, or something we should all support, because it is a wrongness that needs to be resolved in order for the angelic side of life to be free from enslavement and entrapments. We are not sure if Martin is a '1st' in real life, but it helped us make a good point about the problem we earnestly seek to solve.
The problems faced by the angelic due to the enslaving 1st has been discussed in previous reviews including The Hunger Games, The Damned, The Bling Ring, London Boulevard, Lol, and Problemista.
  • ADHD
Carl's son mentions a six seconds video upload, and Carl and his new partner, Martin lament the low attention span of the new generation. A low attention span and problems with paying attention to detail are some of the problems arising from information overload due to new media sources and the speed of information dissemination. So ensure you consider ADHD problems when you're trying to communicate to a large audience. Makes us wonder how much attention our readers need to have, and we are grateful for every little ounce you give.

  • Descend to Ascend
Carl loses his job as a Chef but ultimately starts his own restaurant. In life, sometimes you have to descend to ascend. Sometimes you have to accept the fall in other to see yourself better and have a better perspective on things. Don't be afraid to fall when what you hold on to is leading you in the wrong direction, because its no use rowing harder when you're going in the wrong direction.
