Thank you once again and welcome to this issue of your favorite movie review blog. This movie reminds us of the challenge of water in our ecosystem and how much we are yet to accomplish in our world. It would also give nostalgic memories to avid movie fans of the cult classic 'Jaws'. We hope you enjoy every detail of this issue.
- The Seventh Continent
In the opening scenes of this movie, Sophia (Berenice Bejo) refers to the accumulation of marine debris located in the North Pacific Ocean as the 'Seventh Continent'. This is a common reference by environmentalists and scientists in reality.
This scene is a stark reference to our lack of responsibility, accountability, and disrespect for nature. Our world is over 70% water and like we mentioned in the movie 'Thrash', we need to learn to live successfully in and on water. There are several myths, stories, and legends in history that mention the total destruction of our world by water. What if it is an ecological cycle that happens in a time frame not yet calculated by scientist. Wouldn't it be wise to have the capacity to live on water?
The 'Seventh Continent' provides an opportunity for developing a thriving community on water. If we could develop recycling production systems on ships and send them to clean up the ocean, it would provide a first step towards the development of an eco-city in the ocean. Salty water can be purified through a simple process of evaporation, which collects vapor and cools it down into drinkable water. Thus, even the heated working engines of a vessel can be a process for creating drinking water.
- The Imbalance
After arresting Mika (Lea Leviant), the police check in on a homeless person living by the Seine river. This scene is a reference to the imbalance in our world.
Homelessness and a lack of basic amenities is one evidence that humanity is not growing properly. We should make adequate efforts to checkmate the imbalances in our systems and ensure to cater for everyone, because everyone has something to contribute towards the success of our human race journey, no matter how small their effort might be. Money that caters to the needy, keeps the economy running. It keeps grocery stores working at full capacity, and in turn supports farmers and transportation businesses needed for distribution.
- The Power of Calmness
Mika's attempt at guiding the shark, Lilith, out into the ocean with a sonar beacon ends in disaster, as the shark massacres both Mika and the cheering crowd.
Most of the shark's victims are pushed into the water by the stampede resulting from the shock of Mika's attack and the presence of the police. If most of the people had just stood by and watched without moving, all of them would have survived. In reality there are similar events where less lives would have been lost if the people had stayed calm. For example, in 2002 an armory explosion caused a chain event of detonations in a high explosives storage facility at a military complex in Lagos, the resulting carnage and stampede lead to a high number of deaths from civilians who were trampled on and others who died from drowning in the canals and rivers while attempting to flee.

- There's Nothing Special About It
The Mayor (Anne Marivin) refuses to cancel the coming triathlon. She mentions the big budget and expectations of the world for the scheduled program. She disregards the life of civilians in favor of an event which led to much more fatalities.
There's nothing special about it, is a phrase that refers to the ability to let go of things regardless of the pressure to continue. It is a checkmate to addictive, exploitative, and inconsiderate practices which appear to be more important than they really are. Calling off the triathlon for a day or two till the waters are safe would do little to ruin the event. In reality, we should learn to let go of things which threaten to consume us with a controlling desire or feeling. Sometimes, when you step back you'd get a better perspective or find a better opportunity. We also discussed this concept in the review of the movie 'The Platform'.
- Eco-consciousness
What do we do about the hazards of war? Just like the shells under the Seine river in this movie, which appear to be from World War I and II. There are many danger zones around the world which still harbour undetonated bombs and landmines. These leftover bombs like garbage are a serious threat to the future.
In truth, MAN needs to act more responsibly! But to do so, we would first have to overcome our differences and reduce hostile relations towards one another. We need to have a long term perspective in mind when we look at things and initiate action on certain matters. For example, the use of space rockets that dislodge empty fuel tanks and used engines in transit to their destination is a potential hazard. It is like a rising garbage dump in the void of space or does it fall back to earth and is its impact on land calculated?
We need to develop an eco-consciousness when we initiate projects or events.
