'It was a mistake, I regret it but its too late now, I'm addicted'. These are the words of Martin (Barry Keoghan) as he lights a cigarette in Kim's (Raffey Cassidy) room while on a first courtesy visit. In another scene, Matthew Williams (Bill Camp) asks Anna Murphy (Nicole Kidman) for permission to go out and have a smoke during an important speech at a doctor's conference. These instances in the movie help symbolize the power of addiction.
Addiction is a form of slavery that's difficult to describe because it looks like a willing decision from the victim. - The Wrong Approach
Steven kidnaps and tortures Martin in his basement, hoping to get information that can cure his kids. However, in a show of defiance, Martin bites his own hand and spits out the flesh. Obviously, torturing Martin proves ineffective. The lesson here is that the wrong approach to solving a problem usually aggravates that problem and makes it more difficult for reconciliation to be achieved.
