Thank you for joining us on this movie review. Netflix had a real man live inside a small house installed in a billboard over Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles to promote this thriller. It is definitely a must watch.
The movie starts off with a quote by Arthur C. Clarke; 'How inappropriate it is to call this planet earth, when it is clearly ocean'. Enjoy reading the life lessons listed.
- A Lesson in Calmness
On Day 2, the parents rush down to try the door and they see the kids calmly playing at the table. 'You guys seem really calm about it', their mother Riley (Greta Lee) asks, and the kids reply; 'There's nothing we can really do about it'. This is a tough lesson coming from kids.
In real life, when you can do nothing, when something is out of your control, do you panic and lose it, or do you take a deep breath and wait the tide? Calmness is a super power. We reviewed this in the movies titled 'Wrong Turn' and 'No Escape'. Furthermore, there are various situations in life that truly require that you do nothing. When you do nothing and stay calm your senses become open to other perspectives and options that help you develop a better response to your situation. - Routines
The parents create detailed routines and daily activities for the children to keep them active and going.
In the real world, I recently stumbled on a quiz from a career coach on LinkedIn. The quiz asked; 'How do you stay motivated in downtimes'? one answer is Routines. Routines keep you going even when things seem like they are falling apart. Even when you can't see the results or benefits of what you are engaged in. Routines keep you inspired, improves your abilities and skills and ensures that you'd be ready when the moment comes to apply your specialty. Routines are a life building force that sustains your motivation, inspiration, and aspiration.
- What Really Counts
The Dad, Jason (Wagner Moura) acknowledges the importance of managing essentials; The things that really count, Power, Water, Gas, and Food.
If you grew up in third world countries, you would have more appreciation for such things that aren't basically provided and still count as a luxury in some parts of the world. Like we mentioned in the review of the miniseries 'I Will Find You', man only enjoys three things; Food, Sex, and Comfort. These essentials acknowledged by Jason are basic to the sustenance of what man really enjoys. So have more appreciation for the basic things and contribute efforts towards their provision and sustenance in society. This should be a major goal or theme in the fight for universal basic rights, lets be our brother's keeper.
- Traditions
Panic sets in when the power starts failing and the lights start blinking.
This is a lesson that's related to the importance of traditions. In this perspective, we need to understand that our basic cultural traditions where imbibed in us through the 13 Queen Mothers by DNA programming and they are much older than the religions humanity have grown to adopt. There are certain aspects of tradition which have been corrupted and seem barbaric but there are many which hold clues to human survival. For example, the tradition of outdoor barbecues in the western world is a programming for surviving the advent of any disaster related to loss of power. Those who have outdoor cookers stand a chance of surviving much longer than those who rely on external sources like power or gas for cooking. Even if you had a pantry full of raw food, without a cooker it'd still be a big challenge. Even if you don't smoke, its good to have a lighter or matches in a cupboard.
- The Big Picture
If you see the perspective of the family as a representation of humanity and the house representative of the protective covering of earth. The movie becomes a symbolic reference to our world and the importance of managing our affairs properly in other to build the capacity to withstand the hazards and challenges that come from outside our planet. Not necessarily, Aliens but the natural hazards and challenges the human race is meant to surmount as we make the physical ascent into the heavens. We are not ready, mostly because we haven't built capacity and capacity comes from a balanced eco-system.
In addition the way the family survives on catching their own livestock and rearing little crops inside the house, brings to mind the possibility of establishing an eco-city in the middle of the ocean. In fact, three eco-cities have been previously recommended by this author. Three cities strategically located or triangulated to support one another in any event.
