Hidden meanings in Film noir: NOVOCAINE (2025) - A sleeping dog is better than a dead lion...

Thank you for joining us once again on this journey of social analysis and self-reflection as we review the movie titled Novocaine starring Jack Quaid as ordinary bank worker with a super natural ability or disability to not feel pain. Sounds like an awesome super power! Lets dive straight in to uncover social meanings hidden in its scenes.

  • Big Corporates
Bank manager, Nigel (Craig Jackson) gives a Christmas speech about the customers as family members rather than clients, but in the next scene Nathan Novocaine (Jack Quaid) has to give a customer, Earl (Lou Beatty Jr.) the sad news about his bankruptcy.
In reality, the impersonal and distant nature of big corporates is worsened by the introduction of Ai systems and chatbots who work without social cues or allegiance to long standing customers. Such corporates try to improve on customer service but the working standards and policies sometimes have adverse effects on customers.
This is a reason why some people prefer patronizing the corner stores who can give credits because of established relationships to the larger stores who have no tolerance for a failed credit card.
  • Bully Problems
Novocaine shares his experience with high school bullies while on a first date with Sherry (Amber Midthunder).
Our inability to curb bully problems at an early stage often leads to much larger social problems as we have discussed in previous reviews including Bully, Sexual Drive, Errementari, Antares, Rob Zombie's Halloween and many others. Just type 'Bully' or 'Bullies' into our search feature on the drop down menu of our home page.
Thankfully, Novocaine's history with bullies doesn't lead to being a killer or a monster.

  • Skeletons
"Everybody is hiding something", Sherry says to Novocaine as she reveals her stomach scars and placates his hurt emotions.
Everyone has a skeleton in their cupboard that most of them are ashamed about. This is why its quite ridiculous to fall for some blackmailing schemes out of embarrassment or guilt. We must accept that we are imperfect. Even Jesus knew a prostitute, and we are not sure why but the reasons can't be far fetched.
You preach about being good, and everyone places the standard of a spotless saint on you, as if you were not also created with sexual desires or you don't need love. God doesn't give the love of women, because he created women for that purpose. We must accept our limitations and try to not be hindered by them especially in a society were those who do much worse portray themselves as a standard or a controlling authority. We should also learn to stand in support of people who are victimized rather than shame or discriminate them.

  • Love Lifts
Novocaine gets really uplifted by Sherry's acceptance of who he is, but his joy is cut short when armed robbers storm the bank.
Love is uplifting and it is easy to get carried away by emotions and lose sight of potential dangers. For example, I once meant a girl in the university that got me kind of excited. I often spent the night at her place and one early morning before dawn while heading back to my apartment on the other side of campus, I got mugged by two thieves who placed a gun on my back and took my wallet and phone. Maybe it was just a rod, but I was completely caught unawares and I should have been more vigilant at such an unholy hour because it was still dark.
Be wary even in beautiful moments because our world is filled with envious and wicked people especially people who have a personal vendetta against you and are capable of using spiritual bonds to torment and destroy your happiness. Control your excitement without ruining your special moments, so that you can protect and defend what you love. Remember even the bible says 'The heart of man is desperately wicked'.
  • Don't be a Hero
Nigel takes a bullet to the head after being bashed in the face because he tries to play a hero by refusing to open the bank's safe. Its not his personal business and the business is likely insured. So why take the risk?
Don't be a hero in life, especially in situations were there are standards, policies, or institutions designated to handle such crisis. It doesn't mean that we should be insensitive but we shouldn't take unnecessary risks to prove our worth. A sleeping dog is better than a dead lion.

  • Emotionless
Novocaine's ability to not feel pain makes him sought of emotionless. However, he shows that emotionlessness isn't just about an ability to withstand pain but an ability to think clearly and make the right decisions. On one occasion he makes the right call going after the criminals because the police receiver announced a back-up delay of 8 mins, and on another occasion he stalls the robber with tales while waiting for his gaming partner, Roscoe (Jacob Batalon) to arrive.
Being emotionless is not about being a cold hearted pain absorbing freak, its about developing a mental capacity to objectively assess a situation and make sound judgements.

  • Love Weapon
Sherry turns out to be a double crossing two-faced bitch working undercover for the robbers to help obtain the bank's security code.
In reality, many men spill their guts out to a woman who shows them a little affection and its all part of an orchestrated system that keeps men deprived of sexual pleasure and affections. Falling in love with a woman who is on a secret mission to ruin you or keep you under her armpits is a terrible fate for any man. Even in the bible story, the powerful Samson lost his strength, freedom, eyes, and ultimately his life to Delilah.
Love which should be a situation of total trust has become a weapon of control. Don't be too trusting of people just like we mentioned in previous reviews including Damsel, Apex, and You Are Alone etc.
It is a shame but love might be a treat to your well-being. Therefore, I plead with you my loves (demonic sisters), let us right these wrongs and rebalance our world. So that my fellow suckers can stop sucking on the wrong bust, if you get my drift ;)

That's our take on this amazing breath of fresh air movie that keeps you wondering 'what the f#%@ just happened' as you sail through its expertly choreographed scenes and sceneries. Thank you and enjoy the rest of your week.
