A boxer called to priesthood and a masturbating priest in search of a hidden treasure are the backbone of this uncanny look at the dark side of religion. This movie unveils various aspects of religion and society. Thank you for joining us once again as we unveil the darkness that threatens to send us back into an apocalyptic spiral. Enjoy reading.
- Love or Fight
In the early sequences of this movie Father Jud Duplenticy states that "If you start fighting wolves, before you know, everyone you don't understand becomes a wolf". This is a very important statement that pertains to life. For example those who struggle with schizoprenia and manic depression syndromes tend to be suspicious about almost anything that comes their way. If they are the aggressive type, they often end up causing harm to innocent people. Similarly, those who struggle with the itchy bond problems like we reviewed in the movie 'A Scanner Darkly', are also likely to cause violent harm to others if they become suspicious that its activated by people. If everything appears like it needs an aggressive solution, or you tend to apply aggression as a solution to problems, then you'd only be building a vortex of violence around yourself. Learn to be calm, take up meditation as a personal practice, learn to observe and ask yourself how other people cope with similar situations. There's always something to learn if only you'd stay calm and think before acting.
- A Bond of Enslavement
Monsignor Jefferson Wicks (Josh Brolin) confesses to masturbate to his newly assigned priest, Fr. Jud. To Fr. Jud his confessions were like a torment, but in reality they could also be an inducing temptation to also indulge. As a Catholic, my greatest sin and most common confession during my teenage years till late twenties was masturbation. Frankly, it was the sin that came with the lightest penance. So I went to the priest with a heart weighed by guilt of masturbation and pornographic indulgence but left with a light heart, knowing my penance was easy to accomplish. It was much later in my late thirties that I started to see the wrongness of religion and the enslaving bonds to keep masturbating until the young women had been stripped of all sexual pleasures and were ready to bear children. Just like we mentioned in our review of 'Yes, God Yes'.
Religion therefore becomes a front for the enslavement of the sleeping and ignorant angelic vessels. Little wonder there's less emphasis on religion in the western world where people are more knowledgeable and informed. We might be wrong and we welcome your corrections in the comments sections below but if we're right, then its an insult taken too far. Moreover, the imbalance is to our detriment, because life is based on Karma, like a mirror coming straight back at you. Honestly, We must learn about ourselves, who we are, and our purpose so that we can realign our affairs. Our world doesn't need religion, it needs love.
- The Darkness Behind Religion
The story of Grace Wicks (Annie Hamilton) who waited for her father to die, only to be disappointed by a missing inheritance is the back story behind the growth of the church. The entire darkness and sadness of the story is a reference to the true sadness and darkness behind the growth of religion. It is symbolic of the darkness hiding behind the veil of religion. From mental slavery, to oppressing the poor and ignorant, to violent missionary incursions and 'holy wars', religion has been a major source of death and suffering in our world. By their fruits you shall know them, and the dark fruits of religion far outweigh the light it portrays.
- Indirect Bonds
Monsignor Jefferson Wicks uses offensive languages and deeply provocative sermons to stare up his congregation. His threats and slurs sound hateful and some attendees leave midway through his masses. It appears like a common religious thingy, like most people find preachers boring or apprehensive over nothing. However, in this situation the priest is purposely being manipulative and those who don't walk out on his sermon, he considers as those he can truly rule and control. In a spiritual dimension, those who stay partake of his wrongness.
This is the 'indirect bond' problem, the problem of observing without actively rejecting wrongs. For example the claim that our world is bonded to wrongness is rejected by many, but most people who reject it have partaking of the systems of wrongness. For example, you join a society, and the women are stripped naked for everyone to see. It feels common, it looks common, its on TV, Magazines, phones and everywhere around you and you feel elated that you've finally be permitted to also enjoy the succulent breasts of a young woman. You were so excited that you didn't see the wrongness of it. You didn't see the bonded enslavement of the women. How about when you paid for sex and it was a night to remember, every curve, juice, moan, and touch felt like a new world, and you felt extra tall in the morning. It was so good, that you didn't see the wrongness of sex trafficking, kidnappings, and snuff films which are all branches from the sale of sexual pleasure. Every wrong you accept, supports a much worse wrong at a higher level than you can immediately observe.
Also consider the indirect comment situations, where for example, someone mentions something demeaning, degrading or belittles another person in their absence, and you smile without speaking against the attitude or rejecting the comment, even though you know the person they mentioned isn't really like they claim. Such instances are also exploited by the wicked who might place bonds on the victims life based on your silence, and your silence can be spiritually taken as a seconding or support of his claims. Ensure to disassociate yourself from things that are not right or that victimize other people.
- Intimidation Tool
Monsignor Jefferson uses intimidation tactics as he tries to bring the new priest under control. First, he fights with the priest during a confession, then he screams at him to get out of a church meeting when he comes without being notified. Intimidation whether direct or indirect is a strong tool for mental control. Indirect intimidations occur in situations where a person purposely maltreats other people in your presence to make you see their power, its like an ego booster for such people. Personally, I don't condole intimidations around my sphere, and if I notice it, I report it or reject it by instructing you or complaining that I'm not comfortable with it. A simple statement, like; 'Please could you stop treating this person in that way, its really disturbing to me, and if the person is so enslaved by your superiority, then can you please take it away from where I am and go do it somewhere else'. Its not overthinking or overreacting because its important to your mentality. Don't condole indirect intimidation because its like secondhand smoke rubbing off on your mentality. However, don't challenge people who might harm you, report such cases to appropriate authorities, without fear, and even if they insult you, they would know that you can't be ridden in the same way.
- Good or Bad
Martha Delacroix (Glenn Close) claims that all her life she was the good one not the bad one, as she finally confesses to her deeds and what she tried to protect. In reality, many of us suffer from the misconceptions of God and Religion, Spirituality and the pursuit of Heaven. If what you do makes people suffer then you're a bad person, end of story!!!
This movie was quite thrilling in its plot and twists and we hope you enjoy watching it as much as we did. Thank you.
