Nadja is a street hooker treated badly by her pimp. Susanna feels deeply touched by her situation and tries to take her off the streets. This movie shows a different perspective on the need to rescue sex trafficking victims. Here are some hidden meanings in the movie you might have missed.
- The enslaved mind
Nadja is a forced sex slave who's constantly brutalized by her pimp and forced to sell her body on the streets. In reality, like most young girls in the system, this is the number one cash cow business for 'our so called defenders'. Reducing our women to products for sale. In a world bonded to wrongness through the objectification of young women, the enslaved mind hinges to one direction; 'What the world demands of me' instead of 'What do I demand of myself'. This mindset is a strong form of mental slavery that limits the female gender from self actualization possibilities. Every woman learns to depend on her body, and become subdued and demoralized when they lose their sex appeal. The human being leaves for approximately 80 to 90 years but the period of sexual peak period and excitement lasts only about 20 to 30 years. Isn't it then irrational to emphasize only on sex appeal?
- Misconstrued
After Nadja is rescued from prostitution, she catches the attention of Giulio, and jeopardizes his relationship. Giulio's mother Susanna becomes disturbed and threatened by Nadja's presence. The biggest challenge of being a teacher or a preacher is that it places a high sense of responsibility on the individual along with unnecessary saint-like pressures. The fight against sex slavery, entrapment and enslavement of women should not be misconstrued for a desire for celibacy. Sex is a pleasurable activity not a practice of humiliation and pain. Sex can be reinvigorating and motivating but it's not supposed to be a method for the forceful stealing or harvesting the rights of the angelic ('Fools').
- Stigma
Nadja becomes stigmatized due to her history as a prostitute, and Susanna cannot bear the thought of Nadja having an affair with her son, Giulio or her husband.
No one works to correct the wrongness of the bonds on women but everyone is quick to stigmatize a whore. Aren't we all whores, if we only think about money and benefits without considering the impact of our affairs on the world? It is sad to see women exploit women and women being unsupportive of each other, especially when they are the ones on the receiving end of the wrongs. To overcome stigma and discrimination, there needs to be a general awareness and consciousness of the wrongs and the impact it has on our world. The impact, especially, because most people still feel distant from the issues which threaten the stability of our human race journey.
- Like a grain of sand
There is a scene in the movie were two other prostitutes are shown standing on the streets, as if to say 'now what'? Rescuing one girl from sex slavery is like a grain of sand in the desert or a drop of water in the ocean, because many more are still sexually entrapped. Lets not confuse sex slavery as unique to only roadside, brothel, or hotel prostitution, no. It is the general enslavement and entrapment of women, the gender discrimination and humiliation of the feminine gender that's the focus of this blog. The solution is in breaking the bonds of entrapment, the bonds by which the demonic hold the angelic as slaves and consequently affect the spiritual, and ecological balance of the world. Don't be discouraged because of every little counts.
